Sam
Clark is a ceramic artist who received his degree in Graphic
Design with a minor in Drawing from Delta State University.
Later receiving a Masters Degree from Savannah College of Art and
Design in sequential art.
Growing
up with a mother who is also an artist, Sam says he has always had
an interest in making art. He works in clay for several
reasons: "you can work fast in clay and it is very easy to
manipulate... You can build up, tear away, reform and reshape
quickly. It is an amazing material." Using clay
Sam makes narrative art; telling an unspoken story with a certain
gesture, look, mood or stance. Sam believes the energy used
while creating remains in the work, therefore leaving a trace of
human touch. Imagination is a key element in Sam's work for
without imagination the sculpture remains a lump of clay.
"If the story is to unfold there must be interaction between
the viewer and the work of art. I like the idea of that
dependence; the creature or animal gets its life from the
imagination of the one who beholds it.
