THE NEW GALLERY IS NOW OPEN! The new Southern Breeze Gallery is easy to find. Simply take I-55 to the Old Agency Road exit. The exit will dump you onto Old Agency Road going west. Move over one lane to the left and then proceed in what becomes the right lane into the merge lane beside the round-about. You’re now headed north on Highland Colony Parkway. Take the second entrance into the Renaissance Shopping Mall. You’ll see Southern Breeze Gallery on the left in the arched doorway.
Our new gallery was designed by Architect, Jeff Barnes of Dale and Associates, built out by Nicholas Acoustics, and our colors were selected by Cindy Brown of the Cupboard in Clinton. I can't even begin to tell you how their vision and skill contributed to the wonderful space we now have. Together they created a space that far surpassed anything I imagined. COME SEE US! Southern Breeze Gallery will be open at two locations through July 31, 2008. You can find us at the Renaissance at Colony Park, Monday – Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 1-5; and at Highland Village, Monday – Saturday 10-6. The new Southern Breeze Gallery is easy to find. You may remember her vibrant paintings of zebras, horses and figures. She was a talented painter and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and many friends.

ARTIST RECEPTION May 15, 2008, 5p-8p. Dot Courson, Susan Ingram and Lucy Gaines. Mark the date!
On Thursday, May 15, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, Southern Breeze Gallery invites you to its new location in Ridgeland’s fabulous Renaissance of Colony Park, to experience the most recent paintings of Dot Courson, Susan Ingram and Lucy Gaines. Each of these artists devotes a significant portion of her work to wide-open vistas with waters-ways, footpaths, trails and meandering courses of vegetation. Their landscapes are visual records of journey, place-of-rest, solitude and peace. Each artist compels the viewer to visualize scenes of common experience from her un-common point-of-view. Dot Courson, a native of Mississippi, cannot remember a time when she did not paint. As a child she spent hours in field and wood “mesmerized by small things.” Her intent is “to record the beloved places” so that the viewer might reflect, “I know this place.” She creates focus in her paintings by manipulating degree of detail. She renders the edge of a building so tightly that it is almost photographic. From that detail she loosens the painting to the foreground, where she employs impressionist style. Or the tightening and loosening may occur in reverse. The effect is to direct your viewpoint within the composition. Susan Ingram exercises tight control over line, color and concept to create finely-wrought images that are expressions of pastoral serenity and beauty and the inherent goodness of the world. For her, the process of faith is integral to the process of painting. Her spiritual venture mirrors her venture as an artist. You will find her paths a recurrent theme, a symbol of her path through life and faith. She states, “There is always one more step on the faith-journey just as there is always one more painting on the art-journey.” Her collectors often say that her paintings are so realistic they can step into them. She constructs an encompassing “viewpoint” that pulls you into the scene. A native of Jackson, Mississippi, she has taught art to adults and children for thirty years. Lucy Gaines uses two color-palettes, the intense tones of prismatic light and the neutral tones of light’s shadow. She is a colorist and her vistas are bold flashes of color and brush or, alternatively, muted contrasts of earth against sky, shadow against earth and one fold of landscape against another. Her memories are tagged by “vivid recollection of physical space.” Perhaps this is why she summons line, shape and color to explore space through the imagery of barns. She states, “I use their majestic architectural forms as chromatic space expressed in Rothkoesque terms.” Her topography is, in essence, an exploration of viewpoint through shape, as a function of color. The public is invited to meet Dot Courson, Susan Ingram and Lucy Gaines and view their works at the new gallery at Renaissance of Colony Park on Thursday, May 15, 5:00-8:00 pm.
